Classroom Guidance

Classroom guidance lessons are designed to teach children skills in the following areas: self-understanding and self-confidence, getting along with others, solving conflicts peacefully, assuming responsibility for their own behavior, coping with feelings, developing effective study habits, and gaining an understanding of the world of work.  A variety of activities including reading, discussion, games, writing, and role-playing are used to help students learn and practice new skills.

October Guidance News...

Mrs. DeMuth's second grade class had the first in a series of four lessons using a program called "How Does Your Engine Run?" This lively classroom program incorporates music, movement, and a number of sensorimotor strategies to help children understand and experience ways of improving their concentration and attention to task. The other second grade classes will be starting this unit soon!

Mrs. Mullen's class had a lesson which focused on a new approach to "conquering" tests by discussing what to do "before", "during" and "after" a test. Key concepts were reinforced with a lively game of TRY Bingo.

Students in 5B and 5C experienced a classroom lesson about the importance of being POSITIVE - about themselves and others - and the effect on their everyday lives and relationships. Among other things, they did an activity to illustrate the wisdom of the famous line uttered by Thumper's mother in the Disney classic "Bambi" - "If you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything at all!"

Watch for more information to be posted as other classes have their guidance lessons!
